Overview of Planning and Zoning

Leadership Rockcastle Sponsors Information Session on Smart Land Use

As an initiative of the Leadership Rockcastle Alumni, a presentation intended for education purposes was made by Kriss Lowry of Kriss Lowry and Associates. The downloadable audio is a complete recording of the information she presented during the two-hour meeting. The files are downloadable mp3 files intended for you to hear the entire presentation and better understand the termonoligies associated with building codes, planning, zoning, subdivision regulations, comprehensive master plans and other options available for Kentucky communities in helping to protect the land in their cities and counties and create a system for long-term infrastructure development and community growth management. Leadership Rockcastle Alumni sponsored this session entirely as a educational session to help magistrates, city council members, mayors and other community leaders regarding the issue of land use and development.

After the presentation was completed, a survey was conducted of the people who attended the presentation the following results were tallied from the participants:

In total, 49 people were registered in attendance, with 36 completed surveys being submitted. This would mean approximately 73% of people in attendance left us some response to the event.

Of those surveys received, 31 people (or an overwhelming 86% of those polled) stated that they were in favor of Planning & Zoning within Rockcastle County. Additionally, 3 people (8%) were undecided on the issue while only 2 people (6%) of people surveyed were against this measure.

Of those surveyed; 28 people (78%) were in favor of county-wide Planning & Zoning standards, while 3 people (8%) preferred P & Z only within the city limits and 1 person (3%) preferred joint planning and zoning among multiple cities. Of course, those that answered "no" to planning and zoning implementation did not list a regional preference.

The individuals surveyed represented a very good "cross-section" of our community with 8 people (22%) from the Brodhead area, 11 people (31%) from the city of Mt. Vernon and 13 people (36%) from the general county area.
